  • Four ships 'sabotaged' in the Gulf of Oman amid tensions

Four commercial ships were targets of a "sabotage attack" off the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday, the country's foreign affairs ministry has said.

The incident reportedly took place near Fujairah port, just outside the Strait of Hormuz, but caused no casualties.

Saudi Arabia confirmed that two Saudi oil tankers sustained "significant damage".

Another vessel was Norwegian-registered, whilst the fourth was reportedly UAE-flagged.

Iran, which borders the strait, has called for a full investigation.

Tensions are high in the region. About a fifth of oil that is consumed globally passes through the area.

Pete (needs at least some modicum of information for this alleged sabotage)

People were wishing something bad would happen really really hard.

Apparently, they used shaped charges to blow holes in the hulls. Just to show they could, I guess.

US 'blames Iran' for damage to tankers in Gulf of Oman

US investigators believe Iran or groups it supports used explosives to damage four ships off the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, media reports say.

Military experts were reportedly sent to investigate the incident and found a large hole in each of the tankers.

No evidence has emerged to show that Iran was involved. The affected countries are yet to assign blame.

The incident has increased tensions between Iran, which borders the nearby Strait of Hormuz, and the US.

About a fifth of oil that is consumed globally passes through the strait. Last month, Iran threatened to close it if it was prevented from using the waterway.

This followed a US decision to end exemptions from sanctions for major importers of Iranian oil.

So weaksauce the holes we were told were blown in the ship cannot even be found:

Saudi Arabia rang alarm bells this week with claims that two of its oil tankers were “sabotaged” and sustained “significant damage”—but now questions are being asked after satellite images showed the vessels have no major visible damage. Details of the alleged tanker attacks—on two Saudi crafts, one Norwegian, and one Emirati—on Sunday are still hazy. One U.S. official told the AP that the U.S. military believes Iran or Iranian allies used explosives to blow holes in the ships. But the scale of the alleged sabotage is far from clear. Video showed one targeted Saudi tanker still afloat without any apparent damage, and satellite images provided to the AP showed no visible major damage from above. The suspicion that Iran was behind the alleged attacks has already stoked tensions in the Middle East and beyond.

Tankers almost certainly damaged by Iranian naval mines, US says

US National Security Adviser John Bolton has said "naval mines almost certainly from Iran" were to blame for the damage to oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman earlier this month.

Mr Bolton provided no evidence to support the allegation, which Iran said was "laughable".

The attacks off the eastern coast of the United Arab Emirates on 12 May left holes in the hulls of four ships.

The incident came amid an escalation in tensions between Iran and the US.

Last Friday, US Vice Admiral Michael Gilday said he believed "with a high degree of confidence that this [attack] stems back to the leadership of Iran at the highest levels".

I don't consider "mines" to be "attacks."

Then again, when Iran says something is "laughable" that makes me think it's true.

Pete (has noticed their rhetoric always becomes greatly exaggerated when they're lying through their teeth)

Doesn't this strike anyone else as odd? The first reports were of "sabotage". Then reports arose that there was no visible damage to the ships. So now it isn't "sabotage" but instead mines? USS Maddox?

What I do know is the economy is almost certainly about to go in the shitter and war is a great distraction from that.

Steve (wonders what the motivation would be for Iran to trigger a war that they would certainly lose)
