  • Standoff escalates between Trump administration, Turkey over deal with Russia

The Trump administration is locked in an escalating standoff with Turkey over its plans to purchase an air defense system from Russia, with a deadline fast-approaching for Ankara to back down or lose out on U.S.-made F-35s – and possibly more.

In a letter to Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan pointedly threatened to block Turkey from receiving F-35 jets if the NATO member goes through with procuring the S-400 system.
“Turkey will not receive the F-35 if Turkey takes delivery of the S-400,” he wrote. “You still have the option to change course on the S-400.”

Turkey has been a joint participant in the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter programsince its Defense Industrial Executive Committee approved a block buy in 2016 for 24 aircraft over three contract years. The country already bought four F-35 fighter jets, which are being held at the Luke Air Force Base for now.

U.S. officials say Turkey’s procurement of the S-400 system could pose a threat to the F-35s, as the two systems are not “compatible” with each other. On June 7, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Ellen M. Lord said at an off-camera press briefing that the U.S. does “not want to have the F-35 in close proximity to the S-400 over a period of time because of the ability to understand the profile of the F-35 on that particular piece of equipment.”

Turkey defies US as Russian S-400 missile defence arrives

Turkey has received the first parts of a Russian S-400 missile defence system despite opposition from the US.

The shipment arrived in an airbase in the capital Ankara on Friday, the Turkish defence ministry says.

The move will anger the US, which has warned that Turkey cannot have both the S-400 anti-aircraft defence system and US F-35 fighter jets.

Turkey and the US are Nato allies - but Turkey has also been establishing closer links with Russia.

A Nato official told the AFP news agency that the body was "concerned" about Turkey's acquisition, while Acting US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said that the US position had not changed. Mr Esper said he would speak with his Turkish counterpart later on Friday.

Trump says US won't sell F-35 jets to Turkey, blames Obama for country's Russian missile system purchase

President Trump has announced that the U.S. is going to halt sales of its F-35 stealth fighter jet to Turkey because the country received a new missile defense system from Russia – an exchange he claims was spurred by actions from the Obama administration.

Trump, speaking during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, suggested the U.S. ended up in this scenario as a result of the past president’s administration imposing too many conditions for Turkey to purchase the U.S.-made Patriot missile system, an alternative to the Russian S-400 system they recently obtained, according to The Wall Street Journal.

U.S. officials previously have expressed concerns about Moscow’s potential intelligence gathering if Turkey came to be in possession of both the advanced American aircraft and the Russian missile-defense technology.

Why would anyone want to buy an F-35 anyway?

Everyone wants F35s. With all their problems they're still a generation ahead of what other countries are flying. Russia and China have fighters they call "fifth generation" but they're nowhere close to the F35 in capabilities, and both were recently launched in limited numbers.

The F35 has issues, but it's the dominant fighter-bomber in the world today.

Pete (is actually pretty surprised we haven't heard much about a sixth-generation fighter yet)

I'm well aware of the F35s problems. It's still generations ahead of other fighters.

In fact, production of the F22 was halted primarily because it was a superiority fighter and there's literally nobody out there to be superior against. The F35 is more than capable of outclassing every other fighter out there. The F22 was unnecessary.

Bottom line...for all its warts, the F35 is THE fighter in 2019. Nothing else comes close (except the 200 or so F22s that are in service).

So the answer to "why would anyone want it" is because it is better than anything out there.

Pete (notes that the F35 is still "in development" and hasn't reached mainline production yet)

It's still in "development" because of all the Cat 1B problems it has which means it can't complete the missions it was designed for. The plane is simply not ready for combat. It has an operational rate of less than 30% (should be 80% plus) and, the ones that can fly, can only fly about one sortie every 3 days vs daily sorties by current aircraft. In tests designed to test close air support, the current (ancient) A10 is a clear winner and it's clear the "tests" done saying otherwise were a total sham. The plane can literally fail structurally at speeds of just mach 1.3 plus (F16s can fly at Mach 2).

I honestly don't know how you can say it's better than anything else out there except according to the manufacturer's brochure. The plane is basically unusable. The greatest brochure tech in the world does you no good if the plane cannot fly.

I do love the A-10. Both an ugly and beautiful aircraft all at once.
