  • Cuccinelli's Statue of Liberty poem: Give me your rich, entitled masses

It's practically a parody of Trumpian ignorance and bigotry: Ken Cuccinelli, the acting director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, offering a rewrite of the famous Emma Lazarus poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.
Instead of reading "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," Cuccinelli suggested--in answer to a reporter's question about whether he agreed with Lazarus's poem--that maybe it should say, "Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge."
This is in line with a new Trump administration regulation that could dramatically reduce the number of legal immigrants to the United States by allowing officials to reject green card and visa applicants if they are low-income, have little education or have ever relied on social assistance programs like Medicaid or food stamps. "This will help Citizenship and Immigration Services objectively determine whether the applicant is likely at any time in the future to receive public benefits,"
The law, Cuccinelli says, will require "self-reliance and self-sufficiency for those seeking to come to or stay in the United States," and "self-sufficiency has been a core tenet of the American dream."

Again, you can have a welfare state or you can have open borders, but you can't have both. So this criticism is just silly because it's completely neglecting the fact America was not a welfare state at the time.

In the best possible light, this guy is really bad at PR when it's his job to be good at PR.

What does it matter when the modern liberals will just eat it up like baby food? I was wondering who the one person was who reposts CNN articles and now I know.

So, you donít think his reinterpretation is problematic?
They speak in bulletpointese leftist nutjob drivel. It doesn't matter. Nothing is as great a motivator as the chance to truly be free.

Again, if you have a welfare state then you can't have open borders so you have to limit who comes in. That's just a cold hard fact. I'm for getting rid of the welfare state. What are you for?

Iím for letting refugees who genuinely need it into the country, irregardless. You honestly think we canít afford a minute percentage of our gdp to help immigrants get onto their feet and, more often than not, become contributing members of society? My grand parents would have died in nazi Germany if that had been the philosophy in the 30ís. I oppose preventing those in need of seeking succor.

First off, there is no such word as irregardless. We can't afford to take care of the people already here Jester. We are $22T in debt. You are living in a fucking fantasy world of economics. We weren't a welfare state in the '30s so not sure what that has to do with anything.

Again, you can have a welfare state or you can have open borders. You cannot have both. I already said I prefer to let let people in and to end the welfare state. You just want everyone to suffer because you can't deal with mathematical reality.

There's an old sci-fi story you would do yourself a favor reading called the "Cold Hard Equation" IIRC. Basically, someone stows away on a rocket and the rocket resources were so carefully calculated for the mission there was pretty much no margin for error. When the stowaway is discovered, the crew has a hard choice to make, but it really isn't a choice at all. Either eject the stowaway into space or everyone dies. It's one of the other, not both.

Steve (sees a prime example with Jester of why socialism is always doomed to run out of other people's money)

Just like the joker bit in the "Dark Knight" with the two boats.
I don't think we are there yet. Only alarmists are acting this way. Basically the mantra of the rep party.

$22T (not to mention the $60T-$100T in unfunded liabilities) is the same number whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, get that though your thick skull. Math doesn't give one single fuck about your partisan cheerleader nonsense. You know who loves partisan cheerleaders? Both parties do because there's really no difference other than to make useful idiots feel like they actually have a say in anything.

                    Stop being a useful idiot.

                      That's great.

But who's going to pay for them?

Pete (apologizes for constantly bringing that up)

Most of them are looking for work. Who do you know is gonna go pick food on a farm. I won't even do that.
Let them do it and become productive citizens. Just like our ancestors.

The real problem is criteria on who can get public service in dire needs. That's the conversation that needs to happen. Get a job or fuck off. Anything from stopping that, needs to be to a proper authority.

Cheaper then building a wall or buying a country.

What's with all these false dilemmas? Is this your new argumentative strategy?

Rarely is life composed of such extreme, exclusive options.

You're either a fucking moron or this is the simply the clearest example yet of how totally dishonest and disingenuous you are. And no, that's not a false dilemma. How little you must think of everyone else here to go down this Clintonesque path of legal word games that any honest person knows is completely false.
