  • US lifts ban on old-style light bulbs

The US is scrapping a ban on energy-inefficient light bulbs which was due to come in at the beginning of 2020.
The rule would have prohibited the sale of bulbs that do not reach a standard of efficiency, and could have seen an end to incandescent bulbs.
Many countries have phased out older bulbs because they waste energy.
But the US energy department said banning incandescent bulbs would be bad for consumers because of the higher cost of more efficient bulbs.
The Department of Energy said it had withdrawn the ban because it was a misinterpretation of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act.
Specifically, the law stipulated that restrictions on bulbs could only be implemented when it was economically justified, Shaylyn Hynes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy, told the New York Times.
Activists say the government has come under pressure from manufacturers.
"It makes zero sense to eliminate energy-saving light bulb standards that will save households money on electricity bills and cut climate change emissions," Appliance Standards Awareness Project executive director Andrew deLaski told the Washington Post.
"Instead, the Trump administration is siding with manufacturers that want to keep selling outdated, energy-wasting light bulbs."

Consumers end up spending more on incandescent light bulbs over the long term, but hey, if it owns the libs, Trump is all for it.

Ironically, the old incandescents are far better for the environment than halogens or (especially) mini-flourescents.

vaporized mercury ain't no picnic, and then there's the heavy metals in the ballast and the circuit boards.

True, but I get the impression that the led bulbs are genuinely better (but I’m not certain)
They speak in bulletpointese leftist nutjob drivel. It doesn't matter. Nothing is as great a motivator as the chance to truly be free.

They may well be, I don't have any idea. That said, the quality of the light they put out is awful for indoor lighting, even worse than flourescents.

You can get them in any temperature of light — you just have to get the warmer ones and the light is great.

My experience with LEDs is mixed. They are far more energy efficient and brighter. Too bright in most cases. Also, despite the fact that they're sold as bulbs that will last pretty darn near forever, I've had to change a ton of them after 2-3 years. The light quality is better (as in more white) but in a lot of cases it's too bright for people who get headaches. In my basement I replaced 4-lamp fluorescent fixtures with LEDs and they were WAY too bright. I ended up using only 1 LED lamp in each 4-lamp fixture to get the right light balance.

Pete (perfers LEDs, but his wife demands incandescents in most rooms where she dwells)

I usually get really underpowered leds for most applications, but when I need serious light, they’re amazing.

I would also note that for sheer power conservation purposes, fluorescents are the way to go. They are more efficient at the point of service but because they are inherently capacitive they are actually better for the overall power balance of a power grid (which tends to skew inductive) than incandescents or LEDs.

Pete (gets that most people have no idea what he's talking about here, but a great deal of our power generation is wasted because we have an unbalanced load on our grids)

We can just build more coal power plants.

That may be true, but then we have to burn all the Republicans in them, and there's a shortage of cattle cars.
