Trump's ex aide Paul Manafort 'hid' $750,000 payment, accused of working to help Putin

Further allegations have been made in Ukraine about secret funds said to have been paid to Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
Lawmaker Serhiy Leshchenko said he had evidence that Mr Manafort had tried to hide a payment of $750,000 (£600,800) from a pro-Russian party in 2009.

Special counsel appointed in Russia probe

Special counsel appointed in Russia probe.

I linked this in the Comey thread too. Maybe it's better here.

The Justice Department on Wednesday appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, including potential collusion between Trump campaign associates and Russian officials.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller to the position in a letter obtained by CNN. Attorney General Jeff Sessions previously recused himself from any involvement in the Russia investigation due to his role as a prominent campaign adviser and surrogate.

As special counsel, Mueller is "authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters," according to the Justice Department order Rosenstein signed.

If anything hangs Donald Trump, it's going to be his Twitter account.

House majority leader to colleagues in 2016: ‘I think Putin pays’ Trump

A month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, one of his closest allies in Congress — House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy — made a politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders: that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016, exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia

Some of the lawmakers laughed at McCarthy’s comment. Then McCarthy quickly added: “Swear to God.”
When initially asked to comment on the exchange, Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Ryan, said: “That never happened,” and Matt Sparks, a spokesman for McCarthy, said: “The idea that McCarthy would assert this is absurd and false.”

After being told that The Post would cite a recording of the exchange, Buck, speaking for the GOP House leadership, said: “This entire year-old exchange was clearly an attempt at humor.

That's obviously a joke, one you don't get unless you know what Rohrabacher has been up to in the last 4 years.

                  So after Comey's testimony...

                  ...is Russiagate dead?

                  Pete (thinks maybe it is)

                    Also, if it is dead...

...do you feel better knowing that your President and his campaign are a bunch of bumbling idiots instead of a bunch of colluders with foreign powers?

Pete (isn't really sure which is worse, honestly)

I never assumed they were clever enough to collude with Russia. There didn't seem to be any evidence of that kind of "secret genius", like Trump supporters talk about. That same "secret genius" assumption would need to be applied to Russiagate. I think the guy is a fool.

"The Worst Thing That Happened to Donald Trump this Week" — Paul Rosenzweig, on the Lawfare blog: Special counsel "Robert Mueller has hired Michael Dreeben, on a part-time basis, to help with his investigation. Dreeben, a deputy in the Office of the Solicitor General, has argued more than 100 cases before the Supreme Court. His specialty has, for the last 20 years, been criminal matters and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of criminal law."

President Trump will not unconditionally cooperate with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s recently opened investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and any possible coordination with the Trump campaign, a defense lawyer for Trump signaled on Sunday.

The notion was dismissed by senior White House aides later Monday evening, who said that Ruddy does not speak for the president. Though Ruddy was at the White House earlier in the day, those aides said he did not meet with Trump, but White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon, a former conservative media leader himself.

The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.
