  • Feds charge Ald. Edward Burke, allege wiretap on cellphone captures him in attempted extortion

A federal criminal complaint unsealed Thursday charged Burke with attempted extortion for allegedly using his position as alderman to try to steer business to his private law firm from a company seeking to renovate a fast-food restaurant in his ward. The charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison on conviction.

The complaint also alleged Burke asked one of the company’s executives in December 2017 to attend an upcoming political fundraiser for "another politician." Sources identified the politician as Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who is running for Chicago mayor.

In addition, the judge demanded that he surrender his 23 guns.

Prosecutors told the judge that Burke, who has publicly opposed the National Rifle Association and proposed multiple gun-control ordinances over the years, had 23 guns at his offices alone. The judge said one condition of his continued release is that he gets rid of all his guns, including any at his home. He also was required to turn over his passport.

    Oh, the irony...

BTW, this is the second Chicago Alderman arrested and charged within a week. And, if convicted, Burke would make nearly 3 dozen convicted Chicago Aldermen in about the last 40 years.

    CHICAGO (WLS) --
Longtime 14th Ward Aldermen Ed Burke has resigned as chairman of the City Council's Finance Committee, according to a statement from Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

He was likely corrupt for most, if not all, of his 50 year political career and only now at the end of his career was he finally caught. We'll see if they even convict.

His wife is a Supreme Court justice. That’’’ll play into an interesting side story....

What kind of jackass takes an anti-gun platform and owns dozens of guns?

That's pretty typical. For example, Diane Feinstein had one of the only concealed carry permits in the San Francisco Bay area for decades, while at the same time campaigning for an assault seasons ban, bans on semiautomatic firearms, high capacity magazines, etc. She surrendered the CCW a few years ago when she was made a federal marshal, which allows for concealed carry everywhere in the US, including airports and commercial aircraft, and federal buildings, including the SCOTUS. But it's ok, because she's s politician and anti-gun.

the advantage for her is that when she retires, she will retain the privilege to carry for life, and while CCWs and the application form s are public documents, federal marshals are protected by law from public view, so we don't know what she is carrying now.

and she isn't alone; for decades, it has been normal for city council members in NYC, Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, etc to carry with or without a CCW, regardless of how strict those jurisdictions are for regular people.
