  • Afghanistan asks for explanation after Trump claims US could wipe it 'off the face of the Earth'

Afghanistan has demanded the United States clarify remarks made by President Donald Trump, who said the country "would be wiped off the face of the Earth" if he wanted to win the war in Afghanistan.

"The Afghan nation has not and will never allow any foreign power to determine its fate," Sediq Sediqqi, the spokesman for the President of Afghanistan, said in a statement. "Given the multifaceted relationship between Afghanistan and the United States, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan calls for clarification on the US President's statements."
Trump on Monday had suggested that he could put an end to the Afghanistan war in a week, but that it would cost millions of lives and wipe the country "off the face of the Earth."

"If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I could win that war in a week. I just don't want to kill 10 million people," Trump said, seated beside Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday. "I have plans on Afghanistan, that if I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the Earth. It would be gone. It would be over in -- literally, in 10 days, and I don't want to do -- I don't want to go that route."

Sediq Sediqqi is living in a fantasy land.

Pete (thinks the Afghan nation has been allowing foreign powers to determine its fate for at least about 100 years)

Winning the war is like finding a cure for cancer. There's no money in the cure, but there's a lot of money in fighting the symptoms.

this is an idiotic statement. There is god-like money in finding a cure for cancer. I'd literally be the richest man on the planet if I had that.

no... they would triple their profits. These are the same companies that are cutting their R&D budget because it makes next years profits better irregardless of their knowing full well that it will cost them severely within 5-10 years. Why do they do that? Because most corporate leadership changes jobs more often than that -- if they can up profits in the short term at the expense of the long-term they will do it every time. A cure for cancer would make them immediately the most profitable company in the world by a huge margin, and they would stay there for the lifetime of the patent (typically ~8 years) -- we're talking hundreds of billions, if not trillions of dollars/year in revenue (Humira is ~116 billion/year) -- most CEOs would sell their soul for 1 year of that. No way in hell anyone shelves it.

If I had a cure for cancer, I could put all my cancer-drug competitors out of business. I'd make all their drugs worthless and only mine would be valuable for some 20 years. I'd probably be richer than Bill Gates, especially since everyone I cured of cancer is quite likely just going to get cancer again sometime later and buy my cure again. That'd probably the most valuable patent that ever issues.

It was an admittedly poor choice of analogy. I was trying to express the idea and not an actual belief.

That being said, to entertain the conspiracy theory for just a moment it's not that the cure for cancer is some new drug. The conspiracy theory is that the cure for cancer is something common and not patentable and that's why no one has an interest in the cure.

Nobel prize has a nice cash award too, but you do have a point. However, if they didn't bust it out for Steve jobs, I don't think it's there.

There is a cure for cancer out there. It's called CRISPR.
