World Cup 2018: Media brand Spain 'stupid' and 'negligent'

'Stupid', 'negligent', the 'end of an era' - the Spanish media pulled no punches in their assessment of the national team's last-16 exit against Russia.

From the sacking of coach Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup, to selection errors by interim boss Fernando Hierro and an ageing squad, the media blamed many factors.

A penalty shootout defeat left the 2010 champions stunned. Here, BBC Sport looks at some of the editorials written by a selection of Spain's biggest publications.

I'm still baffled Japan gave up 3 goals in the last 30 minutes.

They are still passing the ball side to side as I post this......that was embarrasing for Spain. That and their keepr made 1 save the whole world cup is also pretty sad.

One of those kicks went right under him, do better.

Let see if England can not pull a Mexico and choke when it counts.

In my mind the story of the game is that Belgium played hyper-conservatively until Japan went up 2-0. Faced with sure elimination they played their real game from that point forward. Knockout games make teams play cautiously, particularly a team like Belgium which has a ton of superstar attacking talent and some real problems in defense.

Pete (remembers thinking when Japan scored again that now we'll see the real Belgian team)

France did the same crap Belgium did.....they have all these world class players and they play sooo conservative until they are forced to actually open it up...both teams did and they got through. Belgium almost got caught yesterday.

Belgium Brazil is going to be a great game.

Why play conservatively? Saving energy for a later game? Trying to avoid injuries?

That goal is difference between playing Brazil or Sweden as of now.

Soccer has become a game of "dont lose", before "go win".

It makes sense to play that way if you the lesser team. Sweden just did it.

But to watch powerhouse teams that can score goals play like that is frustrating.
