China plans to ban cars that run on gasoline or diesel

China plans to eventually ban vehicles powered by traditional fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, as the country looks to cast itself as a global leader of environmental initiatives and possibly become an auto-export powerhouse.

Well, their air quality is dreadful, and with no significant oil deposits I can see how reducing their oil dependency is attractive.

Jon, do you have a link?

They lead the world in architectural products nobody wants, so why not build automotive products nobody wants too.

Do they have enough generating capacity to charge all those batteries? And, what will that level of generating do to their carbon footprint? Solar, I guess.

This doesn't mean that they aren't going to use oil, it just means that only the state can use it. They likely intend to have oil fired generating plants feeding the grid. They'll get the oil from the south China Sea, so the don't have to import it.
